This has been on my husband’s office wall his entire sales career. We both subscribe to it, 100%.
Here’s why:
Everyone is using sales skills in their lives. The parent who wants the child to eat veggies, is selling the child using the old "choo choo train" technique. The teenager who wants to stay out later, is selling the parent. Whether we realize it or not, we are selling.
Strong sales skills can help everyone at any point in their life journey.
Which is why, when I first came out of international business school and was weighing my options, I chose sales management.
I'll admit, I used to cringe when a salesperson called me. Who wants to endure a pitch when we don't have the time and don't want the product? The idea of becoming one of “them” felt daunting. Not to mention, as an introvert, the idea of putting myself out there to sell stuff was intimidating as heck.
My first career move was international sales for a manufacturing firm. I traveled the world and sold high-end products, held educational seminars, and went on after-sale service calls. After a few years of doing that, I discovered a love for helping others succeed. I also found a passion for strategy and enjoyed solving problems. So, I moved into sales leadership where I could utilize all of those skills.
I worked in start-ups and in well-established organizations.
I've been in toxic environments with 60% turnover, rock-bottom engagement and poor results. I've enjoyed exemplary environments with 15% turnover, 90% engagement and industry-leading results.
I've been in "wild west" cultures. I've been in cultures that fostered solid foundations and consistency in best practices.
I’ve started teams from scratch and I’ve stepped into large, highly tenured teams.
I've led teams that were experiencing meteoric rises fueled by strong markets. I've led teams that were suffering from being in the wrong place at the wrong time and were freefalling like crazy.
I've inherited dysfunctional, failing teams that needed immediate turn-arounds. I've stepped into well-functioning ones that were tasked to just keep getting better.
Eventually, it led me to create LeDev. I want to continue to help others succeed in business by expanding my reach beyond just one organization. I love to help leaders and businesses who have a passion and desire to do better and be better. I love what I do, I put a lot of energy into my work, and thrive when others succeed.
Over the years I’ve come to understand and appreciate the salesperson.
Taking a risk with your family livelihood to build a book of business from scratch takes guts. Going through the incredible highs and dealing with the emotions of the lows is no joke. It’s not an easy profession.
The only person I understand and appreciate more is the sales leader.
The sales leader endures all of the sales pressures of a salesperson AND has to shoulder the burden of hitting a team budget. The role is fast-paced and everyone always seems to want more from you. Still, you have to remain cool, supportive and clear-headed.
As hard as sales can be, sales leadership is another level.
To all you sales leaders out there, I get you and I admire you.
Sales Leaders, I've been in your shoes and want to help!
